Dra. Carmita Abdo
Carmita Abdo, MD PhD in Psychiatry, is an Associate Professor of the Department of Psychiatry, Medicine School, University of Sao Paulo (FMUSP), Brazil. Dr. Abdo is also a tutor at the Masters and Doctorate Programs of the Department of Psychiatry of such Medicine School. She is responsible for the course “Aspects of Human Sexuality” of the Postgraduate Program in Psychiatry and for the course “Sexual Medicine” at Graduate level. Moreover, she is a member of the Committee of Postgraduate Program in Psychiatry and Graduate Program in Medicine. She is responsible for the course "Specialization in Human Sexuality" at the Postgraduate Program of FMUSP. She has founded and coordinates the Program of Studies in Sexuality (ProSex) of the FMUSP, a multitask group of teaching, research, health assistance and community services in the area of sexuality. She is head of Sexual Medicine Unit in Clinics Hospital of FMUSP. Her research interests are: Sexual Medicine; Medical Psychology; Psychotherapy; Psychopathology of Communication.
She coordinated the most comprehensive study on Brazilian Sexual Behaviour (ECOS) in 2000 and a broader study in 2003, about Brazilian Sexual Life (EVSB). She coordinated the Aging Brazilian Population Study in 2006, and Mosaic Brazil in 2008, an epidemiological survey regarding differences in affective and sexual behavior in a continental country with contrasting culture.
Dr. Abdo is a member of the International Society for Sexual Medicine (ISSM), of the Latin American Society for Sexual Medicine (SLAMS), of the International Academy of Medical Sexology (AISM), and also an honorary member of the Brazilian Society of Urology (SBU).
She has published approximately two hundred papers in national and international medical journals and has presented lectures in over 600 national and international medical meetings of Psychiatry, Sexual Medicine, Urology, Gynecology, Endocrinology and other medical specialities. She has written eight books and dozens book chapters on different aspects of Sexuality, Sexual Medicine and Medical Psychology, and is a member of the Editorial Board of several scientific journals.
